Sustainable development encompasses seventeen goals designed to reduce poverty, promote gender equality, provide affordable and clean energy solutions, guarantee quality education services and more. Unfortunately, most countries have yet to meet these objectives.
At its core, sustainable development involves making all aspects of development sustainable, by balancing three pillars: responsible consumption and production practices, environmental protection measures and progressive social values.
Environment
Sustainable world building begins by safeguarding future generations from any damage to our planet, whether through protecting natural resources, reducing pollution levels or responding to climate change. Furthermore, sustainable world development involves encouraging economic development and social stability for a better tomorrow.
Environmental sustainability involves exploiting natural resources within Earth’s carrying capacity without disrupting ecosystems (Kanie & Biermann, 2017). Furthermore, sustainable agriculture practices must be employed to support local jobs while safeguarding their environmental attributes (Kanie & Biermann 2017).
Sustainable development also relies upon green technology, to reduce energy consumption and pollution, preserve ecosystem services like pollination and fertile soils, as well as protect climate by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Such efforts are essential to creating a healthier and prosperous society, renewing the relationship between people and environment, as well as showing leadership. Achieve sustainable development by taking ownership over its implementation will only become possible once governments, civil societies and businesses demonstrate ownership, leadership and citizenship – this means governments, civil societies and businesses all taking action toward this end goal!
Economy
Sustainable development seeks to ensure access to reliable energy and economic expansion while protecting our planet, which means limiting unnecessary consumption while mitigating pollution’s adverse effect on both environment and personal health.
Unsustainable development occurs when individuals prioritize short-term gains without considering any harmful repercussions for future generations or the planet itself. For example, cutting down forests for quick profits often neglects to consider that ecosystem recovery will take decades; endangered species could lose their homes; and communities could face increased flood risks in future.
Traditional economists believed that natural resources were infinite; as humanity breached ecological limits, this assumption became untenable (Basiago & Daly 1996; Meadows 1972). Sustainability refers to production that meets present consumption levels without jeopardizing future generations’ ability to meet their own needs; such as using renewable energies, cutting consumption through technical innovation and recycling waste while also limiting pollution. This new model includes employing renewable energies, recycling waste efficiently and using recyclable products in manufacturing.
Society
As humans, we live on a planet with limited resources. With population increases come increased human needs for food, clothing and shelter, making it impossible for Earth’s natural resources to meet this demand. Sustainable development strives to find an equilibrium between economic, social and environmental sustainability (Kanie & Biermann 2017) – including proper healthcare systems, quality education programs for girls and boys, gender equality initiatives and affordable energy solutions with reduced inequalities (Kanie & Biermann 2017). This includes proper healthcare delivery systems as well as quality education systems for girls as well as gender equality initiatives aimed at providing adequate health systems as well as affordable energy solutions with reduced inequalities (Kanie & Biermann 2017).
Sustainable society also depends on fostering progressive social traditions and customs as well as an established political culture, so as to allow communities to solve problems collectively while offering individuals guidance towards moral and ethical compliance.
Adopting sustainable development requires creating awareness amongst the people about its principles and application, such as websites, speeches and movements that advocate eco-conscious lifestyles – leading to higher ecological sustainability globally.
People
People are at the core of sustainable development. Through their actions we can reach each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and strive towards building a better world.
People can promote sustainable development by taking steps that limit harms to both other people and the planet. They can make better use of natural resources, avoid pollution and permanent environmental damages, as well as creating policies that foster social cohesion and tolerance.
The global community can assist people in their pursuit of a sustainable future by providing access to basic needs such as living expenses and healthcare services; decent work; environmental stewardship; and economic stewardship.
SDG-Tracker allows the global community to track progress toward meeting its Sustainable Development Goals through an online publication. SDG-Tracker brings together data sources from two sources and displays 17 targets in an accessible manner; additionally, it shows how individual goals connect and reinforce each other – something not seen with other global development processes.
