Energy Policy and America’s Future

Energy Policy and America’s Future

Energy security

Success for America in providing affordable, secure, and sustainable energy will ultimately determine its future. Unfortunately, energy policy goals have become politicized and shortsighted; for instance, cancellation of Keystone XL pipeline and regulations that increase costs and complexity threaten America’s ability to maintain affordable, secure energy supplies in the form of affordable electricity supplies.

ESI provides an analysis of current energy security risks in the US and aims to highlight their interplay among affordability, reliability and sustainability – three legs on which American energy stands. However, unlike other attempts to measure energy security this measure uses concrete data while taking policy factors into consideration.

Calculating its Risk Index, the Energy Security Initiative (ESI) considers 18 indicators representing key threats to U.S. energy security – such as foreign-sourced fuel supplies and minerals; global market disruptions; and cyberattacks on key infrastructure. As these risks develop over time, so too will their balance change within ESI; its index will reflect it accordingly.
