Smart mobility systems are the heart of this digital infrastructure and provide the city with the data it needs to maximize efficiency, reduce energy consumption and improve services for citizens.

By implementing connected vehicles, smart cities cut traffic congestion and emissions, making them more livable for their citizens. Reduced congestion also provides economic benefits as it can save up to three percent of a country’s GDP per year in car accident and fuel costs. In addition to the physical security concerns, smart cities must address cyber threats. Data breaches are possible if the devices in a smart city do not have adequate security features such as encryption. This can expose personal information such as identity and credit card details or allow hackers to manipulate the devices in a smart city to steal services or resources such as electricity, water or traffic management systems.

A key challenge is to ensure that smart city technology providers and city officials have the knowledge, tools and expertise to detect and respond to evolving cyber attacks. This requires prioritizing resources to develop a secure infrastructure and to provide ongoing training and education to address the new risks. It also involves ensuring that different departments such as IT, security and operations are working together to address security issues. This cross-department coordination can identify potential vulnerabilities and ensure that a city has comprehensive threat response capabilities.
