Recent news stories featuring electric vehicle battery fires may have given some consumers second thoughts about buying an EV, but in truth EVs are highly secure vehicles. Should an accident happen, their batteries burn slowly instead of exploding like gasoline fires do.

As well as passive features like airbags, electric vehicles offer advanced driver assistance systems to keep drivers and passengers safe on the road. For instance, these features allow them to detect pedestrians or vehicles in front of them and automatically slow or stop if necessary; additional safety features may include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

Note that any work on an EV or HEV should be conducted by qualified technicians with experience working on high-voltage systems to avoid shock and injury as well as possible battery damage. Overall, however, electric cars offer greater safety due to having no tailpipe emissions and reduced fuel consumption than their gasoline-powered counterparts.
