Christopher Alexander’s A Pattern Language provided rules to guide humane buildings that are sensitive to their environment; modern form-based codes continue to evolve through Duany/Plater-Zyberk’s SmartCode first implemented in Vicksburg Mississippi and central Petaluma California.
Redevelopment of Brownfield Sites
Sustainable urban infrastructures aim to deliver high quality of life while protecting natural resources. Cities can achieve this objective by repurposing old industrial and commercial properties known as brownfields – these properties typically possess existing infrastructure that reduces redevelopment costs and timelines; additionally, reuse can help avoid sprawl development issues by diverting development onto non-prime land.

Local governments can implement green infrastructure through various mechanisms, such as ordinances, incentives and policies that prioritize green space inclusion, multi-functionality and connectivity. Practices to promote this include street plantings, rain gardens, bio-swales, permeable pavements, green roofs, infiltration planters as well as tree and shrub planting and constructed wetlands.
Municipalities can encourage green infrastructure use through development incentives such as expedited permitting or bonus parking spaces, which can act as key drivers of change on private properties where ordinances and zoning codes may not apply as readily.
